Finger prick test as accurate as lab tests
A
report in the British Medical Journal which studied 2690 children
and 120 adults showed that the finger prick blood test for coeliac
disease was as accurate as hospital laboratory tests (Korponay-Szabo et
al. BMJ 2007;335;1244-1247).
Coeliac Test Rated 10/10 by Daily Mail
"This
test is quite valid - the gold standard for 99 per cent of coeliac
patients is the presence of these antibodies," says Tom MacDonald,
professor of immunology at Bart's and the London University medical
schools.
"The test is useful
because GPs sometimes fail to diagnose coeliac properly and the longer
it is left untreated the worse it gets - leading to complications such
as anaemia. If you suspect a problem this is a good way to test
yourself, though see your GP to confirm it.
"Coeliac disease is a
condition which can be cured with a gluten-free diet, so a person with
a positive result can then take immediate action."

Should you be gluten free?
Around 1 in 10 people with IBS could benefit from a
gluten free diet. Now, a simple and reliable home test kit can tell you
whether you should be gluten free in just 5 minutes.
The
importance of an early diagnosis of gluten intolerance (coeliac
disease) cannot be over stressed. Left undiagnosed and untreated,
coeliac disease carries a higher risk of developing osteoporosis,
infertility and bowel cancer later on in life.
If you do have coeliac disease, a gluten free diet could change your life within weeks... but first, get a diagnosis.

Feeling
tired, IBS symptoms, urgency to use the toilet after eating, nausea, mouth ulcers, diarrhoea, bloating, wind,
constipation, headaches, depression, bone and joint pain, weight loss,
anaemia.... the list goes on and could mean you have IBS but any one of these symptoms could also mean that you have coeliac disease (gluten intolerance).
Unlike IBS, coeliac disease (also spelt celiac) is a risk factor for other diseases such as
bowel cancer, infertility and osteoporosis. Early diagnosis is essential. It is estimated that 1 in
10 people originally diagnosed with IBS actually have coeliac disease.
In
2006 and 2007 the home coeliac test was used to test MPs at the House of
Commons as part of an awareness raising event by Coeliac UK, a charity
providing support and advice for people diagnosed with coeliac disease.
A report in the
British Medical Journal which studied 2690 children and 120 adults
showed that the finger prick blood test for coeliac disease was as
accurate as hospital laboratory tests (Korponay-Szabo et al. BMJ
2007;335;1244-1247).
Five good reasons why you shouldn't ignore your symptoms... or those of your relatives
- It is
important that diagnosis is made early as left untreated, coeliac
disease can increase the risks of infertility, osteoporosis and cancer (has anyone in your family suffered from these diseases? - you may be at risk too)
- 4 out 5 people with coeliac
disease don't know that they have the disease or are at risk from the complications
- Half a million people in the UK are likely to have coeliac disease but have not yet been accurately diagnosed
- Around 1 in 10 people have been incorrectly diagnosed by their doctor as having IBS but actually have coeliac disease
- If
you have coeliac disease there is a high chance (1 in 10)
that your children or parents also have coeliac disease.
Gluten is not only found in wheat but also in barley and rye as well - some people are also sensitive to oats but the
good news is that once you have been diagnosed you can lead a healthy,
normal life by avoiding gluten in your diet and there is a lot of
support available from organisations such as Coeliac UK.
Developed by eminent scientists and doctors in Finland - a world centre
of expertise for coeliac disease, the Coeliac Test is a clinically
proven, simple finger prick, blood spot test that detects
high levels of IgA anti-transglutaminase antibodies. This is
an established blood test for coeliac disease which has been shown to give equivalent results to intestinal biopsy and uses exactly
the same materials found in tests used by doctors and laboratories.
If you get a positive result, call us to make a free telephone appointment
to speak with our nurse who will explain what you need to do next.
Please note that if you have been completely
avoiding all wheat, barley and rye for longer than six weeks you may be
at risk of getting a false
negative result. This is because a strict gluten free diet allows the
intestine to heal and the antibody levels to return to undetectable
levels.
The Coeliac Test is different to other tests for wheat allergy or
"food intolerance" tests and is specific for gluten intolerance
(coeliac disease).

diagnostics
specialising in developing laboratory tests for allergies and coeliac
disease for over 20 years. If you would like to speak with Dr Rees

Important message for doctors
The
Celiac test has recently been reviewed in the BMJ and has been shown to
provide reliable results through the detection of IgA tissue
transglutaminase antibodies. For further information on versions of the
